Yakisoba.
A Japanese style dish which means "grilled noodles". But today it's more known as a stir-fry with wheat noodles that have been found in Japanese food stalls since the 1930's.
So many fun ways to make this dish! In this recipe I used Arctic Char which has a rich, flavorful taste and has a pink-flesh color that is related to trout and salmon with skin that is thin, delicate and edible. Other proteins like grilled chicken, beef or tofu work just as well.
Having grown up eating this dish, I love sharing this recipe to new people and hope you enjoy it!
Heat a nonstick or cast iron pan with 1 tbsp. of toasted sesame oil. Add the garlic.
Sauté on medium heat until the garlic is golden brown and brings a nutty aroma. Add the carrots and cabbage. Cook for approximately 5 minutes until tender. Remove all ingredients from pan and set aside.
Bring 1 cup of water to boil and add the entire package of noodles to loosen them up. Once boiling; bring heat down to medium and stir the noodles until they are completely loosened up. Keep an eye on the water evaporating, you want to have at least 1/4 cup left in the pan before adding the rest of your ingredients.
Add the cabbage, carrots, garlic mixture, and your choice of protein. Feel free replace protein to fulfill your needs. In this case I used smoked Arctic Char fish (bones removed). Add 2 tablespoons of Bachan's Japanese Original BBQ Sauce and mix until thoroughly combined. In this recipe I added the Artic Char filet on top after sautéing the noodles.
Important Note for Fish: As shown, I saved the filet(s) of fish to add on top. I heated all the fish in the oven at 375 degrees for 10 minutes at the same time that I'm cooking the vegetables and noodles.
Garnish the Yakisoba with crunchy chili oil, chopped green onions, pickled mustard greens, toasted sesame seeds and an extra drizzle of Bachan's for a healthy and satisfying meal.
