While not initially intended as a Thanksgiving side dish, there is no potato dish I'd rather serve at my Thanksgiving table than this one.
Think of all the rich, salty, creamy things you can imagine (starting with mozzarella and ending with prosciutto) and you will find them in this torta. It's also one of the few savory recipes we make that calls for both butter and cream. Perhaps then it comes as no surprise that the original name for the dish is gatto, from the French gateau, or "cake."
While this dish makes a hearty winter side dish (or in this case, a decadent Thanksgiving side dish!), it can also be served as an antipasto, or with a salad for a light lunch.
